Please read everything below to know how to apply.

World-Changing Workplace SaaS App Startup #lovework Seeking 2 Phenomenal Engineers

These are both fully remote roles anywhere in a Continental U.S. time zone (PT-ET). Buckle up, this posting is LONG and not for the faint of heart... only true corporate rebels should apply.

OVERVIEW

We’re seeking 2 phenomenal engineers to join our team.

Lightning-fast learning agility and hyper-attention to detail are must-haves, and there’s room to grow these roles into just about anything over time.

We’re looking for people with some work experience, but for both of these roles, hunger, drive, skill, and a true passion for our Noble Cause is MUCH more important to us than how many exact years you’ve done anything.

We need major SaaS platform skills – have you built a B2B SaaS platform (mobile+web) before, maybe even for large organizations? Are you obsessed with UI and how to create a phenomenal UX? These things are VERY important to us.

Big bonus points if you also have experience with platform data and how to visualize it back to customers in simple, beautiful ways.

This position will start with a 60-day contractor project (to ensure you like us and we like you), but assuming all goes well with the project it will immediately become a full time role with our Core Team.

WHO ARE WE?

First, you need to decide whether you would want to work in our environment. The job won’t matter if our company is not a place you want to work!

#lovework exists to create a world where everyone can love work. This is our Noble Cause.

Yes, we know it’s a little crazy, and yes, we’re deadly serious about it.

To do this, we provide a technology platform called #lovework, which helps teams inside organizations do the best work of their lives in today’s fast-paced, distributed, always-on world — no matter if the team is in person, virtual, or hybrid.

For far too many people, work is a stressful and burdensome necessity.

To us, work should be one of the BEST parts of your life, not something you “tolerate” — we spend FAR too much of our lives working for it to suck.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR HIRING

We only hire “stakeholders” who are fully invested in our mission of creating a world where everyone can love work. We don’t have “employees” here. As a member of our Core Team you would be a stakeholder in our business and have a vitally important voice in the future of our business.

We believe people are fundamentally good and want to do great work. We believe in self-management and distributed decision-making. We believe you are a fully-formed adult with a big beautiful brain in your head, and if you work here we’ll expect you to use it to make good decisions on behalf of our team.

We believe in talking a LOT about the “why” behind our thinking. We believe that anyone can be a leader by doing something worth following. We believe in having those tough adult conversations that don’t happen in most workplaces. We believe in constantly running experiments and pivoting quickly when necessary.

We are a virtual, fully remote team, and always have been, with colleagues scattered across various cities in the U.S. and outside the U.S. as well. We used Slack and Zoom to communicate looong before the pandemic, and we get together in person as often as we can.

We DON’T believe in static job descriptions, office hours, dress codes, or doing work that sucks the life out of us.

We believe work can and should be one of the most joyful and fulfilling parts of our lives, and that the organization you work with ought to be a place that actively helps you become the best version of yourself.

Overall, we don’t have very many “rules” or “policies,” but we have a LOT of guiding principles that help us LIVE our Vital Behaviors (that’s what we call core values). You can read more about these things by downloading our CultureBook (link below)… you’ll definitely want to get to know these in depth if we get into a conversation.

ARE YOU A GOOD FIT?

Here are a few things you might be, if you’re a good fit for #lovework…

  • You’re excited by the idea of working with a fluid, expanding organization that is currently-small but is poised to grow quickly (and is already part of a growing global movement), and you’d enjoy helping us figure out how to grow faster.
  • You want autonomy and responsibility to lead your part of a business, and you see the role of “ownership” of your domain as an honor and privilege.
  • You care about removing suffering from the workplace, and you want to have a BIG impact by helping create a world where people can actually LOVE their work.
  • You’re looking for a place to do deeply meaningful work, where you can focus on RESULTS, not just “activity” or “clocking hours” and would like to collaborate closely with other passionate stakeholders.
  • You want a career that allows you to make meaning, not just money.
  • You describe yourself as “entrepreneurial.”
  • You are infectiously positive and not easily distracted by a constant stream of “new things,” but are hyper-focused on seeing what you can do to help people get from where they are now to where they want to be.
  • You do your best to live in a world of abundance and not in a world of zero-sum scarcity (where the only way for you to “win” is for others to “lose”).

WHAT THIS IS NOT (A REMINDER)

If it’s not already clear, #lovework is NOT a place where you’ll be in any kind of “box” where you’ll find a clear list of tasks to perform and regularly set times to be “at work.”

You will never, ever, have a “manager” here.

If that’s something you’re looking for, please stop reading now and please do not apply. We don’t mean to be harsh; we just don’t see life or work that way, and working with us simply won’t be a fit.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THESE 2 ROLES

1) Using your energy and strengths to drive forward our mission to create a world where everyone can love work. You will be encouraged to articulate this spirit in whatever language that resonates with you, but a passionate drive towards this mission is what moves every Core Team member here, and your heart needs to beat in this direction if you want to join our team.

2) Living our Vital Behaviors in an authentic, constantly-growing, embodied way. We provide actual real-life examples of how colleagues are demonstrating these behaviors in an All Hands meeting we do every month — meaning, these things are not just metaphorical motivational posters of soaring bald eagles on our virtual wall, but things we actively look for and reinforce in practice. (Again, to learn more about these things, download the CultureBook.)

3) Adopting the approach of a “business owner.” By inviting you into our Core Team, we are entrusting you with leading your part of this company exactly like you owned the company (and maybe you will someday!?). You have the freedom to craft your role around your strengths and what energizes you most, which is a pretty neat thing, but also comes with some pretty serious responsibility. You need to be able to work with the systems we have in place, and even better, once you get acclimated to how things run, decide how to make everything work better. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A MANAGER. We’ll need you to always be thinking about how to make things more efficient while still serving our team in the best way possible.

4) Having the mindset of an Adult. We’re not looking for someone who needs to be told what to do, when to show up, what time recess is, and when they need to go home. We’re looking for someone who is a self-managing, self-motivated adult who can figure out the RESULT that needs to be created and enjoys figuring out what they can do to get it done without being watched, managed, or directed. There are NO managers at #lovework, and none of us “manage” each other. We all work together in community to get things done, and we need someone who will join us as an equal team member, not as an “underling” or as an employee/child.

5) Serving and supporting other colleagues in our organization. People who do well here have this orientation, and we actively try to help each other.

6) Being proud of your obsession with building phenomenal, useful, beautiful technology.

7) Believing that tech can and should be used for good. In fact, it’s ideal if you have an insistence that tech MUST do this more in the future than it currently does today.

8) Having an ongoing infatuation with simplicity. We believe that simple is beautiful, and that it’s our jobs to craft technology that makes it easier for people to do the really hard work of introspection, learning, and practice. In other words, when our tech is working the way we want it to, it’s usually because we “got out of the way” sufficiently to give users a truly great experience.

9) Having a working knowledge of the full stack of technologies we use to build the #lovework platform (including Flutter/Dart, React, Mobile, NodeJS, MongoDB, AWS EC2 and/or ECS), and also demonstrating a “T-shape” of expertise, where you understand the broad stack of applications we use to build the #lovework platform but can also go deep in a specific area.

10) Collaborating with Product and Design to engineer solutions that solve customer problems within the constraints of the project. Also, articulating an engineering strategy that aligns with the company’s short- and long-term product vision and understanding how to “own” your decisions based on such a strategy.

11) Having had a strong mentor and/or having been one, which has taught you the humility to never stop learning. This would be exemplified through your daily habits of how you interact with teammates.

12) Being an “Apple person.” We are an all-Apple team, and though we design our app to work great on Androids and the Web, of course (our mission ensures this!), we truly are iOS-first in the way we think about UX and overall design aesthetic.

13) Paying insane attention to details. We “sweat the small stuff” because we believe there’s divinity in those details. We know many (most?) people may not notice all the little touches we add, but we don’t really do it for them, anyway — we do it because we want to build something that feels a bit like love.

14) Exhibiting clear results-based motivation. We don’t watch clocks. We figure out what result we need to get and stay focused on that. When that result is achieved, we take a break or “go home” for the day. And no one else decides for us when we do that — we’re all adults who figure it out based on the required result and the commitments we’ve made to our colleagues. If it’s not yet totally clear: this is NOT a “paid-hourly” position.

15) Speaking up when you are the expert. And in our company, EVERYONE is a leader in their area of expertise. No one will be telling you what to do in the areas of your strengths. Instead, you will be leading US in your areas of expertise! You will be an integral part of the #lovework tribe and a vital part of our business. As such, you’ll attend our Weekly Huddles, various All Hands meetings, and during all these you will be expected to chime in as if you owned the place.

To apply for this role, we need your answers to the following questions. We DON’T need to see your resume, so do NOT send it (if it’s attached we will immediately delete your email). And absolutely do not call us. For now, just email us your answers to the following 7 questions (the email address to send to is at the bottom of this posting):

  1. How is this a fit for you and the things you love doing?
  2. Considering the “T-shape” of knowledge comment above, please describe a) your areas of broad expertise and b) your area of depth.
  3. What time zone are you in?
  4. What would you get out of being in the work environment described here?
  5. What do you need from us to be successful?
  6. Where do you want to go with your life? (For us, career is part of your life, not separate.)
  7. What are the top 3 things you would bring to this game?

After we receive your answers, we’ll be in touch to let you know if we want to invite you to continue in the process or not. We want to move this as quickly as possible, but please give us a couple weeks to reply; we promise to let you know either way!

THINGS THAT ENERGIZE YOU (IF YOU'RE A GOOD FIT)

  • Making a “dent in the universe” by helping create a world where everyone can love work
  • Building phenomenal, beautiful, software
  • Injecting creativity and fun (and some quirky Easter Eggs) into said beautiful software
  • Following up in a timely fashion with others
  • Communicating complex things in a simple way
  • Keeping a LOT of “plates spinning”
  • Moving at a VERY fast pace — pivoting, changing, adapting, being agile
  • Creating something that’s never been built before

NECESSARY SKILLS

Self-motivated and self-managing — Everyone in our company is self-managing. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A MANAGER HERE. We work very closely as a team, and everyone leads from their areas of expertise. If you’re not comfortable leading us in the skills and responsibilities listed in this posting and/or you want to be told what to do, you will not thrive in our company.

Can play well with others — You have contributed as part of a team of engineers, ideally a team utilized distributed decision making and demonstrated effective communication. Ideally, you’ve stepped into existing codebases and been part of incremental improvements to documentation, testing, and/or reliability. Bonus if in addition to a legacy codebase, you have experience in a greenfield project.

Opinions and openness — You have opinions about software development processes, but are constantly looking for ways to improve.

Sincere relational skills — You don’t need to be an extrovert, but you do need a good sense of how to work in a team and communicate with others.

Insane attention to detail — Can you follow every step in a process? Better yet, can you CREATE the process? Are you great at follow-up and making sure things get done when they need to be? This posting is long for a reason. If you’re thinking it’s too long instead of thinking it’s great to get all the details about this company and this job, this isn’t the position for you.

High sense of urgency — You need to push us, not the other way around.

VERY tech-savvy in a futuristic kind of way — Ideally, you are a person on the cutting edge of new tech, pushing US to stay current and/or ahead.

Team-player-ness — You work well in “community,” not just alone. This doesn’t mean you don’t get alone time… most of us work from our homes most of the time, so a lot of our time we spend physically apart and working solo. But you have to know how to play nicely with others to succeed here.

Initiative and resourcefulness — Ability to logically solve problems with no supervision / ability to figure things out on your own.

Good at juggling — Not literally of course (though bonus points if you can; that’s just fun!), but you will need the ability to organize, monitor, and track numerous ongoing and one-time activities, events, and projects.

Keeping cool in the midst of ambiguity — You are comfortable with change and working in unknown situations.

Discretion — You display sound judgment in handling and communicating sensitive information.

Positivity — You have an authentic positive attitude and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done.

COMPENSATION

Remember we’re recruiting for two roles here. Roughly speaking, we think we’re looking for one person with a bit more experience and one person that doesn’t need as much experience, but we will see what happens as we get to know all of you!

Each role will be somewhere in the $85k-$165k range.

Our HQ is in Denver, Colorado, but as mentioned at the top, we will talk to anyone in a Continental U.S. time zone.

Your final compensation offer will be based on your experience along with the energy, talents, initiative, motivation, and ideas you bring. For more information on how we think about compensation, please download the CultureBook (link below).

There are also many benefits to working at #lovework that go beyond just money. We talk more about all of these ideas in the CultureBook (link below), but a few of our more popular ones are: fully remote work, unlimited vacation, monthly phone/internet stipend, a work laptop, paid parental leave (after a year), equity ownership pathways, and perhaps most importantly, an amazingly supportive and autonomous culture that actually treats you like an intelligent adult with a big brain in your head.

We want to become the absolute best place to work in the world, and if you join us now, you will be a vital part of helping us build that!

TIME FOR YOU TO "INTERVIEW" US!

This is a two-way street… you need to get to know us to see if you want to work here! Here’s more info to help you with that process…

  • Our main website (there’s a lot of great content here that describes the overview of our approach)
  • Our CEO Josh’s TEDx
  • Josh’s “Self-Management” Keynote (a more in-depth perspective on why organizations of the future need to be self-managing)
  • Josh’s book
  • Our CultureBook (that famed thing we kept mentioning above; it’s basically our “Constitution” that contains the riverbanks/guardrails which govern our organization)

That’s all for now! Thanks for reading. Please send your answers to: careers [at] lovework.team
